The Rule of Unintended Consequences...Penalty Shots in OT (FLyers rumors)

A while ago I wrote a blog about stuff I thought we would see during the 3 vs. 3 OT that no one expected. But I missed one....and it should have been obvious to anyone. More breakaways mean more guys getting hauled down on breakaways....and that of course equals more penalty shots...

It's funny how something designed to keep us away from the shootout leads to more penalty shots.. Last night, the Lightning and Flyers played the first ever NHL 3 on 3 overtime and it was all that it is hyped up to be and more...with chances going back and forth and NHL fans getting to see more skill than ever before. Time and Space is such a wonderful thing to give skilled hockey players.

And last night saw Scott Laughton getting awarded the first ever 3 on 3 OT penalty shot as well. Bishop stopped him and the game continued.

After the Laughton penalty shot was awarded there were several infractions by both teams that were allowed to happen....I believe we may see Refs afraid to kill the 3 on 3 and give 4 on 3 power plays, while they will be much more likely to award penalty shots...

What do you think?

We will discuss all this and more on the buzzcast live at 1pm ET.
