Not much really happening in the Sharks world these days, so here are some random thoughts to argue about in the comment section.
- John Scott has another job, and it’s in the division. That means great things for San Jose. If Scott is going to suit up that means Arizona games should be a gimmie in the win column. I can’t think of a single person on San Jose that would fight John Scott to make his presence on the ice for the Coyotes worthwhile. Thanks, Arizona, for guaranteeing five wins.
- Looking through the schedule for 2015-2016, it’s much better than last year’s. Sure, the Sharks play 5 of 6 on the road to start the season, but after that they get 7 of 9 at home. The balance is better and it’s one less excuse card for the team to play this year.
- With Peter DeBoer going to name a captain at some point before the season starts, my money is on Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Last year I thought Vlasic should get the ‘C’ and I’m not changing that, although the common theme seems to lean in Pavelski’s favor. DeBoer is a defensive guy, Vlasic happens to be one of the most underrated defenders in the NHL – and he’s going to be around longer than Pavelski. There’s a better chance for long-term stability in leadership with Vlasic as captain. Plus, he’ll get some recognition that’s long overdue. Vlasic should get the ‘C’, Pavelski and Thornton for the ‘A’ – with Marleau as another ‘A’ if they want to rotate helpers.
- Doug Wilson still needs to consider future moves – even if that means by the deadline. Let’s face it; this is a team with intentions on making the playoffs and competing. Whether or not they can actually do that remains to be seen, but the intentions are there. As it stands now I’d watch the team through October and make an upgrade move before getting too deep into November. San Jose has to get out front of the trade market so they don’t overpay for players with more draft pick assets. The possession and general play of this team needs to be closely monitored starting with the 2nd line and moving down. If the team isn’t performing up to standard after a month, make a move.
- A lot of stock is being put in Martin Jones being a viable starter. Anyone who thinks Alex Stalock has a chance to win the job, well, I’m just going to have to agree to disagree. You don’t give Jones the contract he got without having him in the plans for the number one job. Stalock is going to get as much of a chance this year to win the job as he had last year, which is no chance at all.
It’s poll time. Who should be captain?
