Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen has made it no secret that he'd like to upgrade the team's defense this summer.
Whether that's trading for a high-end blue liner or moving up in the draft in order to get one Kekalainen seems set on going big-game hunting.
#CBJ have had talks about moving up draft board, but teams are only sniffing around now. First two picks are out of the question, of course.
— Aaron Portzline (@Aportzline) June 20, 2015Of course there's absolutely no guarantee anything comes from those discussions.
That said if a team is willing to move down the Blue Jackets are armed as well as anyone to trade up given they have a plethora of NHL forwards and an abundance of draft picks at their disposal.
Forwards that could be moved likely include Artem Anisimov and Kerby Rychel, among others, while the team also has 10 draft picks - including six in the first three rounds - that they could package to try and move up for a potential star blue liner.
Should the Blue Jackets trade up it's safe to say it's for Noah Hanifin - or even Ivan Provorov - as Zach Werenski will almost certainly be available when the Blue Jackets pick at 8.
Whether anything comes of these discussions remains to be seen but Kekalainen is doing his due diligence to ensure he's ready to pounce on any opportunity that presents itself.
