Hotstove: Who Will Win The Vezina Trophy In 2016-17? (Devils)

Todd Cordell

I think this is the year for Cory Schneider. Over the last three seasons only Carey Price has a higher save percentage and there's no guarantee he returns to his old form coming off a season-long injury.

Voters (general managers) seem to care more about wins than save percentage, for whatever reason, but with the addition of Taylor Hall and added depth the Devils should win more games this season. If they do, and Schneider continues to play like he has in recent years, he will have a very good chance of winning the Vezina.

Jason Lewis Safest pick is probably Holtby, just because of the sheer workload, defensive help, and great numbers he posts. Considering Washington did not lose much in the way of personnel this season it would probably be his to lose to start the year.

However I wanted to go with someone really off the beaten path, keep a sharp eye on Brian Elliott. Calgary SHOULD be better this year defensively, they have a younger team, and Elliott posted vezina worthy numbers last year outside of the games played area. In fact, Elliott's save percentage was 2nd only to James Reimer at 5v5 last year amongst goalies who played at least 1500 even strength minutes. (.938). He's going to get a huge workload in Calgary, but will be under a less cushy defensive system to St. Louis. He is still an excellent goaltender that could make a huge difference for Calgary.

To summarize Holtby for the safe pick, Elliott for the wildcard.

Peter Tessier It won't be Carey Price! Or maybe it will but in this coming season it might be wide open. If we consider that the likes of Holtby, Lundqvist and Price (if healthy) would all be contenders but can an outlier come in?

That's the thing that's hard to predict. Assume these three will be in the conversation but if any team has a step back then watch out there might be new Vezina winner come late June.
