Hotstove: Thoughts on Lindholm's six-year extension with the Ducks? (NHL)

In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on Hampus Lindholm's six-year contract worth $5.25 million per.

Todd Cordell This is a spectacular deal for the Ducks. Lindholm is a more than capable producer offensively and he is an elite possession driver despite skating a regular shift against the toughest competition opposing teams have to offer. At 22 he is already one of the best blue liners in the NHL and there is still room for growth.

There are 39 defensemen making as much or more than Lindholm and, quite frankly, there aren't even close to 39 defensemen better.

I'm amazed Lindholm held out this long and still took it on the chin in negotiations.

Peter Tessier As I was writing my long form piece on the latest Trouba news I saw the deal come through and started laughing. Can you imagine the intestinal and chest pains Trouba's agent must have had after seeing that?

It's a great fair deal and how Trouba can expect to get much more than that is beyond me. However this is about Lindholm's deal and he should be happy and excited about that deal and his team. It may be a bit cheap but he can still come out earning way more with his next deal. Rare to see something that works well for both player and team.

James Tanner I have long hailed Bob Murray as one of the worst GMs in the NHL, but credit were it's due: this is an incredibly team friendly contract.

To put into perspective how good of a contract this is, Lindholm makes a little less than half of what PK Subban makes and is, probably, the better player.

So great move here for the Ducks. For Lindholm, though, wow. Not a good estimate of his true worth at all. He should probably fire his agent for getting him such a bad deal.
