The Washington Capitals recently avoided arbitration with Braden Holtby and settled on a five-year, $30.5 million contract.
In this hotstove we discuss whether or not Holtby is worth the money.
Todd Cordell I think Holtby is deserving of every cent he'll make on his next deal and think it's a steal for the Capitals.
Holtby has a .930SV% at full strength since 2012 which ranks him 6th - just below Henrik Lundqvist - in the NHL among 31 eligible goaltenders. On this list he's ahead of Cory Schneider, Pekka Rinne, Roberto Luongo, Jonathan Quick and Marc-Andre Fleury, among others.
Holtby is still getting better (he's only 25) and the Capitals were able to get him signed through his prime at a very team-friendly salary. This is a job well done.
Tim Chiasson Yes.
Holtby's numbers put him with some of the best in the NHL, so he's worth what his contract is going to pay him. With how contracts are trending in the league I'm surprised he didn't get more, honestly.
Holtby gives the Capitals a chance to win every game and when you have a goaltender that gives you that kind of comfort on any given night you have to get a deal done, even though it might seem a bit expensive.
The Capitals are now worry-free in goal for another five years.
