Hotstove: Did The Chicago Blackhawks Get Enough For Patrick Sharp? (Stars)

After months of speculation Patrick Sharp has finally been traded.

Everyone knew the Chicago Blackhawks had to trade Sharp - which surely limited what teams would be willing to give for him - as a result of their cap crunch.

In exchange for Sharp's services the Dallas Stars sent forward Ryan Garbutt and defenseman Trevor Daley to Chicago.

In this edition of the hotstove we discuss whether or not the Blackhawks received enough for Sharp.

Todd Cordell Based on the names involved it seems like an underwhelming return for Sharp but I thought the Blackhawks did OK - not great, OK - here.

Ryan Garbutt is a very useful bottom-6 forward. He's pretty good in terms of possession and he can put up some points. In 67 games last year he had 25 points. That's nothing to write home about but it's solid production.

Trevor Daley struggles in possession but he's a guy that can contribute some offense and put points on the board. He had 16 goals and 38 points in 68 games for the Stars last season. His shooting percentage was well above career average so his goal totals will regress next year, however, he should still be able to put up some points given the talent he'll have around him.

The Blackhawks certainly gave the best player in the deal but they landed a good bottom-6 player, a blue liner who can put up some points and they cleared cap in the process. Garbutt and Daley are both signed for two more seasons so that is a nice bonus as well.

Chicago didn't get full value for Sharp but given the circumstance that simply wasn't going to happen. All things considered I don't hate this deal for Chicago, though I think Dallas got the better end of it.

Tim Chiasson No they didn't, unless we're talking salary cap because they got more than enough in return in that case.

If Chicago was going to cash in on maximum Patrick Sharp return, it had to be done before the Kessel deal. Whatever Kessel netted, Sharp was getting considerably less. That's exactly what happened.

Sharp is still a valuable guy. He's still producing at a top six point clip, still a good possession player.

In order for Chicago to get enough in a deal for me they would have either had to get A) a better player than Trevor Daley/Ryan Garbutt or B) Cleared more than the $1.7M in cap space they got in the trade. Cap space is what Chicago needs, not another bottom-six, bottom-pairing player. Cap. Space.

They should have at least cleared $2.5-$3M space in a Patrick Sharp deal for me to consider the return enough. They didn't trade him because they just couldn't live without Trevor Daley. They traded him because they were being choked out by the salary cap.

James Tanner Trevor Daly is a useful defensman and probably under appreciated by fans outside of Dallas, so if you consider they also saved roughly $2.25 million on the cap, it's probably an OK deal.

It's not like people were lining up to pay the 3 x Cup Champs fair value for a guy everyone knew they had to trade, so all things considered, I think this is a decent return on.
