In this edition of the hotstove we discuss whether or not the Pittsburgh Penguins can still contend this season or if a coaching change and lack of puck movers will prove too much to overcome.
Todd Cordell If the Pittsburgh Penguins are in the playoffs they're a contender.
With Marc-Andre Fleury playing exceptional hockey and a roster littered with stars - at least up front - they're a matchup problem for anyone even if they're not playing their best.
The defense's inability to move the puck has been a problem thus far but when Kris Letang and Olli Maatta are in the lineup plus Derrick Pouliot is inevitably recalled it won't be as much of an issue as it has been thus far.
The team has also enjoyed success making Rob Scuderi a healthy scratch and I think that's something we'll probably see more of moving forward.
The Eastern Conference isn't exactly loaded with powerhouse teams so if the Pens get in - and I fully expect they will - they can make some noise.
James Tanner Yes. They can for sure become contenders. Their roster is very good and they have lots of depth. If Letang is healthy and the new coach takes advantage of the talent on his team and lets them skate, then they should be a dominant offensive team.
