I just heard from a second independent source today that the Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets may be talking about a deal. Allegedly, Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was in Philadelphia to scout the 'Hawks-Flyers game last week, but according to a Philadelphia team source "not to scout the Flyers."
A separate source told me this morning the 'Hawks and Jets have been talking.
I've heard some pure speculation (so I won't share) about names that might be involved, including Bryan Bickell and more coming from the Hawks. But some of the other (mind you speculated) names I heard are kind of significant.
Likely, some will question why trade within the division. Valid question, except that division standings don't matter really as much as just making the playoffs and amassing the points necessary to do so. Further, Cheveldayoff and Hawk GM Stan Bowman have a uniquely close relationship—and if a deal can be arrived at that helps both clubs, it might make sense.
Is a potential deal emerging because of the injury to Duncan Keith? I don't think so.
Rather, I believe the Hawks were already in the market for a veteran defenseman. The injury to Keith just makes the need a bit more acute.
The other thing to bear in mind is the Hawks are probably also talking to other teams—and what this report really signifies is a move of some kind may be coming. Scouts from San Jose, Dallas, Montreal, Buffalo and Nashville have been in Rockford for the Hogs' last two games.
All for now,
JJ
