Expectations for the Calgary Flames have not been this high in years.
After surprising the hockey world with a 45 win, 97 point season and adding a pair of significant pieces during the off-season it seemed like the team had nowhere to go but up.
That hasn't proven to be the case - at least so far - as after two weeks they sit in the basement of the Western Conference and in a tie for 2nd last in the NHL with just two points in five games.
The team is missing one of their key players in T.J. Brodie but that's no excuse for the ineptitude we've seen from the Flames thus far.
They're not finding twine with any regularity, their goaltenders can't stop a beach ball right now and the only team that has been worse at even-strength is the 0-6-0 Columbus Blue Jackets.
Something has to give - and soon - or the Flames could find themselves in too big of a hole to climb out of.
They'll have an opportunity to begin the climb tonight against a very tough (and fresh) Washington Capitals team.

KEYS TO THE GAME 1) The big dogs. Sean Monahan has been held off the scoresheet in three consecutive games and only recorded two shots in that span. Dougie Hamilton, Mark Giordano have combined for just one point on the year. The Flames need more from most of their best players.
2) Make a stop. The Flames have gotten one quality start in five games this year. It's hard to accomplish anything with subpar goaltending.
3) Discipline. Washington's power play has been elite for years and it appears it will be again this season (they're clicking at 38% through four games). If the Flames parade to the box Alexander Ovechkin and co. will make them pay. The Flames can't afford to shoot themselves in the foot right now.
4) A quick start. The Flames are 0-3-0 at home this year and have not given the fans anything to cheer about. Get the 1st one and feed off the crowd.
