Buffalo Sabres fans are salivating at the thought of drafting Jack Eichel in June's NHL Draft.
They are going to love him all the more now that he has skated past a Sabres legend to achieve the Boston University scoring record.
Eichel now leads all NCAA players with 58 points (20G, 38A) in 33 games after Friday night's two goal, one assist performance for BU in Game 1 of their best of three playoff series against Merrimack.
Eichel now has the most points in a season by a BU Terrier hockey player in the past 17 years.
The tall, cool, slickly skilled pivot moved past former Buffalo Sabres captain Chris Drury who amassed 57 points for the Terrier in his senior season at BU in 1997-98.
It has taken Eichel one season to accomplish a feat that it took Drury four seasons to accomplish.
You talk about exclusive company: Eichel and Drury. Does it get any better than that for Sabres fans?
Nashville Predators center Colin Wilson scored 55 points in 2008-09.
The Buffalo Sabres cannot control which of the fourteen non-playoff teams will win the NHL Lottery which will be conducted in April. However, should the 30th pace Sabres hold on and finish dead last in the NHL standingsthey will guaranteed to select Jack Eichel second overall even if they lose the NHL Lottery for Connor McDavid.
Eichel is the #2 rated prospect on NHL Central Scouting's midterm ranking report. He is second to only Connor McDavid for the top North American skaters eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft to be held in Sunrise, Florida.
The third-ranked and top-seeded Boston University men's ice hockey team posted a 6-2 victory over 11th-seeded Merrimack in game one of the teams' Hockey East quarterfinal series on Friday evening at Agganis Arena.
Senior Evan Rodrigues had a four-point night, posting a goal and three assists while the red hot Jack Eichel added two goals and an assist.
BU improves to 22-7-5 on the year while the Warriors fall to 16-17-4. The two teams will meet again today at 4 p.m. for game two of the best-of-three series.
BU broke open the game with a four-goal second period. Junior Danny O'Regan used his 20th goal of the year to give the Terriers the lead for good at 7:23 of the middle stanza.
Eichel and Rodrigues followed with tallies at the 14:11 and 17:35 marks, respectively, and junior Matt Lane made it 5-1 with just over a minute left in the second.
Rodrigues found Eichel for a PPG midway through the third period to give the Terriers a 5-2 lead.
BU owned the shot clock with a commanding 46-19 shot advantage. Matt O'Connor picked up his 19th win of the season with a 17-save effort. Rasmus Tirronen posted 40 saves for the Warriors

Who gives a rat's ass if teh Edmonton Oilers lost in the shootout to the Columbus Blue Jax on Friday night?
The Oilers scored three PPGs and battled back from being down 2-0. That shows a lot of moxy in my book. The Oil gave the Sabres a point in teh McEichel standings by virtue of their 5-4 shootout loss to the Blue Jax.
That's not tanking. That's good old fashioned competing.
Your up-to-the-moment EichDavid standings:
30th: Sabres, 44 points 29th: Roylers, 48 points 28th: Regierizona, 50 points 27th: HeimlichCanes: 58 points 26th: Loafs, 60 points
Buffalo have played 67 games; Edmonton 69 games; Arizona 68 games; Carolina 66 games; Toronto 69 games.
