Could Devils move a defenseman for help up front? (Devils)

While GM Ray Shero has been pretty active in recent weeks (signed John Moore, acquired Kyle Palmieri, etc.) the expectation is that there's more to come.

He has shored up the forward core a little bit by adding Palmieri and signing Sergei Kalinin to compete for a spot in camp, however, there is still work to be done.

The Devils are still pretty weak on the right side and would undoubtedly benefit from another top-6/9 forward.

Given the team isn't loaded with high-end prospects and they're not expected to be good next season it doesn't make sense to part with draft picks.

The Devils are in a good spot on defense and don't have to move any but Shero would surely trade one of the team's young defensemen if the right deal came along.

With regards to that I would imagine Adam Larsson, Damon Severson and John Moore, who just signed with the team, are safe.

I think Shero would be open to moving Eric Gelinas or Jon Merrill, though.

I've touched on this in the past but if Shero wants to trade a blue liner I think Merrill should be the guy to go. I believe that even more so after the team just signed John Moore to play the left side.

John Hynes has talked about activating the defense and allowing them to join the rush to create more offense. I think Gelinas is better suited for that.

I also think Gelinas is very efficient on the power play and is the biggest (goal) scoring threat the Devils have on defense. The goal in hockey is to score more goals than your opponent so moving him seems counter productive.

In saying that if the return was right I would trade him but all things equal I think Merrill should be the one to go.

We may find out soon if Ray Shero feels the same way.
