Connor Brickley came out of nowhere.
After scoring a total of four goals in four years at University of Vermont, he surprised many by scoring 22 goals in San Antonio last season.
But he wasn't finished.
Brickley simply had a sensational camp and showed Panthers brass that he has a solid two-way game. He will join Derek MacKenzie and Quinton Howden on the fourth line to start the season, which should be an entertaining line to watch. MacKenzie thinks both of his young linemates have the potential to be top-6 forwards in Florida.
For as much as Brickley has accomplished thus far, his debut with the Panthers will have to wait at least one game, as grizzled veteran Shawn Thornton will take his place opening night on Saturday.
This is likely Thornton's last year as a pro, and the beloved 37-year-old knows his role may be limited this year as the young kids are deserving more and more ice time. The days of needing an enforcer are becoming a thing of the past, and Thornton knows it.
But as you would expect, he is the definition of unselfish and a team player. Him getting the start Saturday is giving him the respect he is due as a good player and even better person.
He battled a groin issue last year and was a healthy scratch plenty, but in his 46 games the Panthers went 21-15-10. He likely won't see that many games this year, but he will always be seen with a smile on his face and doing whatever he can to help the team.
Sometimes that is more valuable than production on the ice.
As a great career comes to an end this season, Thornton will always be known as a quality player on and off the ice. A start on Saturday night is the least the Panthers could do to say thank you, on behalf of the league.
