Caps in Cruise Control Heading into Buffalo (Washington Capitals)

The Washington Capitals head into Buffalo tonight winners of their last 7 straight games. The Caps currently sit second in the league only to the Dallas Stars who have a three point lead on Washington in the standings (57-54). However, the Stars also have three games in hand than the Caps and with Washington playing the way they have lately, there's a good chance they could clinch another Presidents Trophy come Spring time.

In their last 16 games, the Capitals have outscored the opposition 53-31 bringing in a 14-1-1 record to add to their best start in franchise history heading into the New Year.

This is a Caps team that has proved, during this current 7-game streak, that they don't actually have to rely on the MVP-stylings of Braden Holtby. After being pulled against the Tampa Bay Lightning due to a poor showing, Holtby faced the Rangers and let three goals slip passed him. However, the Capitals bounced back in both games, making unbelievable comebacks and showing the NHL that they are very capable of playing any style game.

The Caps have been criticized in the past for being one-dimensional or relying on Alex Ovechkin too much, but this season, Washington's depth has proven time-and-time again that this team is the real deal. With Braden Holtby looking for a Vezina nod and the Capitals forwards playing a tremendous two-way style game, it is exciting to see just how far they can go in the Spring.

As they enter Buffalo tonight, Washington looks to extend their lead in the East. They are 10 points ahead of fellow Metro division rival New York Rangers.

Buffalo has played well of late, relying on the surprising goaltending of Chad Johnson. The Sabres beat the Bruins last night 6-3, with rookie Jack Eichel grabbing 4 points in the victory.

No new news on the injured Brooks Orpik who still remains out with a lower-body injury. Alex Ovechkin, who was struck in the wrist by a Matt Niskanen shot is bruised, but should be in the lineup tonight.

The puck drops at 7pm in Buffalo.
