Evgeny Kuznetsov has signed a two-year, $6M deal with the Washington Capitals.
Kuznetsov is coming off his first full year in which he scored 11 goals and 37 points in 80 games. He made quite a name for himself this post-season as well, notching 5 goals and 42 shots in 14 playoff games, including the game-winner in game 7 versus the New York Islanders.
Washington is about $10.9 million under the NHL's $71.4 million salary cap after Kuznetsov's signing, which leaves plenty of room for the Caps to re-sign Braden Holtby. Holtby's discussions have been on-going and both sides are very confident in re-signing soon.
Marcus Johansson also needs to be re-signed or possibly dealt to add some more depth at center. Johansson is seeking around $4M.
Kuznetsov was the Capitals first round draft pick in 2010 (26th overall) and spent a few years in the KHL where he became a star. He made his debut with the Capitals two seasons ago.
It's a great signing for the Caps and for Kuznetsov who was set to become a UFA in two years but will now remain restricted at the end of his contract.
In other news, T.J. Oshie has picked #77 for his new Caps sweater this season. Oshie turned to Twitter after the trade and asked fans what he should wear and made the announcement of his decision yesterday.
Oshie has worn #74 his entire career, but has to switch for next season as John Carlson already owns the rights. The last #77 the Capitals had was another former St. Louis Blue - Adam Oates.
More to come...
