Mike Green has signed a 3 year, $18M contract with the Detroit Red Wings, leaving behind a decades worth of memories in Washington.
The Capitals made it pretty clear they weren't going to be bringing the high scoring defender back as they were working against the cap with more than a few tough contracts to nail down.
What bothers me the most about this is that GM Brian MacLellan missed an opportunity to get something of value from Green's rights - a draft pick, a prospect, a jock strap, ANYTHING!
Instead, Green walks away from DC with nothing in return.
“The biggest thing I got from Mike was that he was disappointed that they never had the success as a team that Mike would have liked to have and they expected to have in Washington,' said Green's agent Craig Oster. "He really enjoyed his time in D.C. We were talking about it and it’s almost like graduating and moving on to your next stage of life and I think that’s what Mike is prepared for.…
It's bittersweet that Green is officially gone. He was a great leader in the community and was a fan favorite off the ice. On the ice he was frustrating to watch at times, but his offensive production was one of the best in Capitals history.
Good Luck Greenie!
More to come...
