“Your team whines quite a bit,… MacLean said to Guerin on-air Thursday. “It’s hurt you at times in key situations, and I think it’s hurt you at playoff time.…“It’s definitely an area that we’ve identified as being an issue at times. And you know what? We’ve put ourselves in that position, and we have to be better. There’s no question,… Guerin admitted.
"The referees are out there, they do a fantastic job, the game's faster than ever, and it's really hard to pick things up sometimes with just the naked eye.
"We just have to flat-out be better. And that's it."
I agree with Mr. Guerin. It is an area they have to work on. Currently the Penguins lead the NHL in misconducts. Pittsburgh is tied for the league lead in game misconducts with three (also tied with Montreal and Minnesota).
They also lead the league in ten minute misconducts with 18. Winnipeg has the second most with 11 and then Buffalo with eight.
Only Winnipeg (332) has more minors than Pittsburgh's 307.
The first step in solving an issue is realizing you have a problem. We now know at least somebody in the Penguins front office believes this to be an issue.
Time to solve it before it costs them games.
