Banged Up Flames Light Up The Surging Blues (Flames)

The Calgary Flames hosted the scorching hot St. Louis Blues on Monday night minus a couple key players in T.J. Brodie and Sam Bennett.

As one would expect the Flames scored a pair of short handed goals, chased Jake Allen and put up a seven-spot en route to a 7-4 win.

The Good

- Despite sitting on a lead for much of the game the Flames out chanced an excellent Blues team that had won six straight heading into this contest.

- Michael Frolik, god of killing penalties, showed off his speed while scoring a pair of shorty's. Frolik was also a positive in possession and finished with a game-high seven scoring chances (six high-danger), seven shots and nine shot attempts. He really doesn't get enough credit for how good of a 200-foot game he plays.

- Prior to this game I wrote that the goals would come if Sean Monahan continued to generate scoring chances at a high rate (he had 15 in three games prior to this one). Well, he recorded another five scoring chances in this game and had a pair of goals to show for it.

- Dougie Hamilton was solid in possession and contributed three assists from the back end. Was that enough to earn him more minutes than Deryk Engelland? No, but his performance was encouraging nonetheless. He's been very good over the last few months.

The Bad

- Joni Ortio posted a .900 save percentage at even-strength and an .886SV% as a whole. On most nights that won't be good enough.

- The Flames allowed a pair of goals in the 3rd to allow the Blues to get within one and were hanging on by the skin of their teeth prior to Frolik's 2nd short handed goal. They need to find a way to close teams out when they go up big.

- Deryk Engelland played 10 minutes more than Jakub Nakladal.

Stat Of The Game

Frolik had six high-danger scoring chances. The only other Flame with more than one was Lance Bouma.
