Abdelkader Signs 7-Year Extension (hockey)

Justin Abdelkader has signed a seven-year, $29.75 Million extension with the Detroit Red Wings. The 28-year-old forward is an important part of the Red Wings, just entering his prime and filling the gap of a big bodied presence on the Detroit roster with the absence of veteran winger Johan Franzen due to chronic concussion problems.

Abdelkader was in the final year of a four-year contract making $1.8 Million and with Franzen's future in doubt, it is likely that Wings GM Ken Holland could not risk allowing him to hit the open market.

We will discuss this and more on the Buzzcast at 3pm:
