The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Washington Capitals in a shootout, 4-3 (2-1), at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday evening. The Flyers briefly led 1-0, trailed 2-1 heading into the third period and twice erased one-goal deficits to force overtime and eventually win in the skills competition.
Bobby Brink tallied in the second period (5th goal of the season) for the Flyers before scoring the winning goal in the top of the third round in the shootout. Additionally, Joel Farabee (11th) and Owen Tippett (10th) notched the goals in the third period that forged 2-2 and 3-3 deadlocks. Morgan Frost chipped in two assists on the night. Sean Couturier successfully converted his first-round shootout attempt into a goal.
The Flyers extended their point streak to seven straight games (5-0-2) and improved overall to 16-10-3 on the season. The Capitals are now 14-8-4.
For Washington, Connor McMichael (6th), Tom Wilson (PPG, 10th) and Dylan Strome (12th) scored in regulation. Strome also assisted on the Wilson goal. TJ Oshie netted the Capitals' lone goal of the shootout. Alex Ovechkin racked up four shots on goal and 11 shot attempted (four were blocked, three missed the net) but did not get on the scoresheet.
With Carter Hart unavailable due to illness, Samuel Ersson got the start in goal for the Flyers. He stopped 27 of 30 shots in regulation and overtime and then went 2-for-3 in the shootout. For the Caps, Charlie Lindgren stopped 29 of 32 shots in regulation and overtime. The Washington goalie was 1-for-3 in the shootout.
The Flyers went 0-for-5 on the power play, including a two-man advantage late in the second period. The Capitals were 1-for-3.
The Flyers recalled Felix Sandström from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on an emergency basis to back up Ersson. Marc Staal re-entered the Flyers' starting lineup, replacing Egor Zamula. Philly assigned defenseman Louie Belpedio to Lehigh Valley.
The Flyers will have a noon practice on Friday at the FTC in Voorhees. On Saturday, they will host the Detroit Red Wings (15-10-4) at the Wells Fargo Center in a 7:00 p.m. ET game.
