Wings blow 5-1 lead, win in shootout 7-6 as Kane leads the way (Red Wings)

Summary:

Well, we’ve talked about it at length. Kane has been knocking on the door. Tonight, he landed in a big way. A 5-1 first period was a dream come true as the future Hall of Fame winger led the way. He even had the shootout sealing goal (after Raymond had scored as well). All this is good. It’s good to get a win. It’s good to see #88 be rewarded for all the hard work.

The dream turned into a nightmare as the 5-1 lead disappeared into a 6-5 deficit until Larkin tied up the game with what seemed to be a pass toward the slot that ended up in the back of the net. Taken from behind the red line, that’s one heck of a bounce.

So, the elephant in the room is the complete lack of defensive structure. Yes, 2 goalies are out injured. However, as many have well pointed out, a team system can help keep so many goals from finding their way in. Detroit remains the only team in the league without a win if they don’t score 4 or more goals.

Berube feels like someone Yzerman should speak with. LaLonde has been unable to instill a system that supports non franchise goalies. There won’t be a change (personal thought) in season but the off season should see at least a partial coaching change to help with the defense. The eroded 5-1 lead was embarrassing but not completely unexpected. Maybe a few days off (after tomorrow) will help the team reset mentally. Yes, it is just LaLonde’s second season but it is far from impressive. Yzerman went to someone he knew well and it has had mixed results at best.

Let me know your thoughts on who (if anyone) could immediately impact Detroit’s lack of defensive awareness. The offense is way up, but at some point they need to shut the door. Full marks to Philadelphia for not giving up. Tortorella helped guide the team to an overtime point after an offense packed first period.

Also, would you consider a trade to bring in a truly defensive defenseman that could help in that area or wait and see what Edvinsson, Sandin-Pellikka or a mystery candidate could bring to the blue line next season? Please give your takes. This blog doesn’t exist without you, and your input and insight are very welcome whether we agree or not. We’ll see what Detroit does vs. New Jersey in a quick turn around.
