Eklund was selected seventh overall by the Sharks in this year’s NHL Draft and played in nine games with the Sharks this season, registering four assists. Since then, he’s returned to Sweden’s top professional league, where he’s registered five assists in nine games. The forward should be a key member for Sweden, in what will be his first and only appearance at the tournament, given that this is his final year of eligibility. He’ll be surrounded with some other big names on the team as well, such as Simon Edvinsson, Alexander Holtz, Fabian Lysell, Isak Rosen, and Jesper Wallstedt. Sharks’ 2020 second-round pick Thomas Bordeleau was a lock to represent the United States but tested positive for COVID-19. This comes after Bordeleau wasn’t able to participate in last year’s tournament due to COVID protocols as well. Daniil Gushchin, a 2020 third-round pick by the Sharks, seemed like a good option to make Team Russia, but he was left off the roster. In other news, the NHL has also announced that games will now be postponed until Tuesday, December 28.
