The San Jose Sharks defeated the Anaheim Ducks at home last night, coming away with a 4-1 win.

Then early in the second period, Timo Meier spun and fired a shot past Lukas Dostal, increasing San Jose’s lead to 2-0. The Sharks were outshot 12-8 in the frame, but managed to hang onto the two-goal lead, heading into the intermission.

Gerry Mayhew got Anaheim on the board early in the third period, picking a corner with a nice shot to beat James Reimer. However, Timo Meier scored on a power play shortly after to increase the lead back to two goals and later, Meier secured a hat trick off a nice move to pull the puck between his legs and score with a backhander, leading to a 4-1 Sharks win.

Timo Meier reached 30 goals with the hat trick, now scoring at a pace of 41 goals per 82 games this season. With him due for a new contract next summer, his progression will be an interesting topic to track.

San Jose’s penalty kill also made a big impact in the win, killing off all four of Anaheim’s power plays.

As Reimer continues to put together solid games, it just seems more questionable as to why the Sharks didn’t look to move him before the trade deadline. Maybe the right return wasn’t there but given the thin goalie market, it seems like San Jose could’ve gotten back a nice return. Especially with Kaapo Kahkonen added, it was an interesting non-move.

San Jose’s next game comes on Wednesday, when they face the Arizona Coyotes in the first half of a back-to-back on the road.
