The San Jose Sharks fell in overtime against the Anaheim Ducks yesterday, losing 3-2.

The Sharks struck first on an odd-man rush, with Logan Couture sliding a puck under Anthony Stolarz. San Jose actually generated quite a few good chances off the rush (with some coming shorthanded), and it was a pretty decent start to the game, with the Sharks taking a lead into the intermission.

Anaheim tied the game early in the second period after Max Comtois’ shot went in off Adam Henrique, but San Jose took the lead right back, with Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s point shot deflecting in off Kevin Shattenkirk. However, the Sharks were outplayed pretty badly in the frame and Anaheim managed to tie it late in the period, as Sonny Milano buried a rebound to make it a 2-2 game after 40 minutes.

The Sharks didn’t have a strong third period either, generating just six shots. It did look like Jacob Middleton had given San Jose the lead with a shorthanded goal, but that was called off due to an offside. Neither team could break the tie after that and the game went to overtime.

Only about 15 seconds into the extra frame, Rickard Rakell scored to win it for Anaheim off a stretch pass. It was a controversial game winner, as it looked like Rakell could have been offside, or it could have been too many men on the ice, but the goal stood and the Ducks took the win.

Regardless of how the game ended, it was another poor performance for the Sharks. After a pretty decent start to the game, San Jose had a rough back 40 minutes, being outshot 26-12 over the second and third period.

The 22 shots total was the fifth game in a row in which the Sharks have totalled less than 25 shots per game. They’ve now also managed just 99 shots over their last five games – not even 20 shots per game (without rounding, at least).

It was a positive first start for Zach Sawchenko though, who stopped 33 of 36 shots. At least while Reimer and Hill are out, it’ll be interesting to see what Sawchenko can do.

The Sharks’ next game comes on Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings.
