Thoughts on Shattenkirk signing with the Rangers? (Rangers)

In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on Kevin Shattenkirk's four-year, $6.65 million (AAV) contract with the New York Rangers.

I think Shattenkirk was a great signing for the Rangers, especially given the very reasonable term.

Shattenkirk is at least a little better defensively than he's given credit for and he's among the NHL's best in terms of creating offense.

He has recorded 43 points or more in six consecutive non-lockout shortened seasons and averaged 51 points per 82 games over that span.

Shattenkirk also leads all defensemen in 5v4 points per 60 over the last four years with 6.21. John Carlson is a distant 2nd with 5.17, and only three others are above 5.0.

He'll provide a big boost on the power play and round out an impressive top-4 that also features Ryan McDonagh, Brady Skjei, and Brendan Smith.

He's well worth the money and, as far as free agent contracts go, the term was perfect.

…‹…‹Peter Tessier The best thing about the Shattenkirk deal is the term. It's only 4 years and it's not too outrageous in terms of dollars. The question then becomes does the addition of the player at that cost hamstring the Rangers from doing anything else?

I think Shattenkirk can deliver value for those years but if his deal affects the acquisition of other players that could also help the team then it becomes a bit of a problem. That being said, it isn't right now and the Rangers, who are always flush with cash, have the chance to improve upon last season with Shattenkrik in the lineup.

James Tanner He is definitely worth the money, and it's a great signing. Shattenkirk has great metrics across the board and is an excellent player. His defensive game is underappreciated and he is a legit #1 Dman.

To acquire him in his prime, for nothing but a cap hit, and not even a bad one, is insane. The fact they got him for four years, and not longer, makes it even better.

This is a huge, huge win for the Rangers.
