In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on Carey Price's monster contract extension (eight years, $10.5 million per) with the Montreal Canadiens.
Todd Cordell
Montreal had to give Carey Price his big payday -- the backlash would be insane if they let him walk and trading a pending UFA goalie probably wouldn't fetch them much -- but I still don't like the deal.
Price is the best goalie in the NHL but he has had some injury problems over the last couple years and he'll be 31 by the time his contract kicks in. Very rarely do you get value paying big money for a player in his 30s so I have a hard time believing he'll be worth the $10.5 million for even half of the time he signed for.
As much as I like Price, I think this contract is going to look really bad in a few years.…‹ …‹Marc Bergevin better find a way to turn the Habs into serious contenders over the next few seasons.
…‹…‹James Tanner It's a lot, but what can they do? He's one of the most beloved players in the history of the franchise and one of the best players in the NHL.
Signing him to what is essentially a life-time contract is pretty smart from a PR standpoint. Maybe it does make it hard to win with such a big cap-hit, but what are their other options? Trade him? What would you even get? A package of decent guys and some lottery tickets?
And if you do that, then you might as well trade Weber and Pacioretty.
So the Canadiens had no choice and Price deserves the money. So good move, I guess, but it's really the only move they had.
Peter Tessier Carey Price is a rare type of generational talent between the pipes, he's that good but for how much longer will he be that good? This is massive gamble for the Canadiens as they are tying up a lot of salary for a guy who is 30 and this deal is lockout protection and buyout proof. Yes, it's ugly if things go bad.
The Habs are the new Maple Leafs, trying to make home runs all the time to hide other issues. Carey Price should get paid but not to this extent and to handcuff the team for years as well.
