Sources: Islanders awarded Belmont (nhl)

The New York Islanders are coming back to Nassau County. Multiple sources have said that New York State has awarded the team the right to develop the Belmont site. The official announcement will come tomorrow morning at Belmont.

The team's bid beat out the bid submitted by the MLS franchise, NYCFC, who really wants a stadium in New York City, namely the Bronx.

The Islanders' bid includes an 18,000-seat, arena that would host 150 events annually as well as a space for stores, a hotel, and an "innovation center" that would be developed with resident input.

The next step for the team is opting out of their 25-year lease with the Barclays Center. Islanders owner Jon Ledecky has stated that the team will play at least another season in Brooklyn.

In on the ice news, the Islander host the Detroit Red Wings tonight. Thomas Greiss will start. Dennis Seidenberg will replace Calvin de Haan, who was placed on injured reserve yesterday. This morning, head coach Doug Weight said that the news regarding de Haan's shoulder may be better than first thought. The doctors are still evaluating and deciding on how to proceed.
