The San Jose Sharks completed four trades today before the trade deadline, dealing away four players and getting three players and two draft picks in return.

The Sharks' biggest trade of the day came with the Minnesota Wild, with San Jose sending defenseman Jacob Middleton to the Wild in exchange for goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen and a 2022 fifth-round pick.

San Jose also dealt forward Andrew Cogliano to the Colorado Avalanche, in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round pick. Cogliano scored four goals and 15 points in 56 games this season and the Sharks are also retaining half of his salary as part of the deal.

In smaller moves, the Sharks sent Nick Merkley to the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Anthony Bitetto. Bitetto is 31 years old and has scored four goals and 15 points in 39 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack this season.

Goaltender Alexei Melnichuk was also traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning, in exchange for forward Antoine Morand. The 23-year-old forward has scored four goals and 10 points in 44 AHL games with the Syracuse Crunch.

For some quick notes on the day: Kahkonen is a really solid addition for the Sharks - he's still young and has good upside. It'll make for an interesting situation in net for San Jose with Adin Hill and James Reimer but nonetheless, it's a good addition. With Cogliano, it's shocking to me they had to retain 50 per cent of his salary just to get a fifth-round pick three years from now. He's been a great depth addition but if he wasn't going to return, it makes sense to get something for him.
