Well at least Ryan Dzingel showed up, but for the rest of the club it was pretty much like they had already departed for the season.
Danny Taylor, making his first NHL appearance in over 5 years, did what he could to keep the Senators in the game, but eventually the Bruins' attack wore him down and the team that had something to play for got the result they needed.
Dzingel scored the only goal of the first period, but Boston struck for two quick ones as the midway point of the second neared, and added a third later in the frame to take a lead they wouldn't surrender. Dzingel scored a highlight reel goal to get Ottawa back within one just over 7 minutes into the third, but they would get no closer and Boston added a couple of insurance markers late for the 5-2 win.
Boston got the results they needed in their quest to overtake the Lightning for first in the Conference In addition to their win, Tampa lost in overtime to the Hurricanes to close out their season, and a Bruins' win Sunday night over the Panthers in the final game of the season would give them home ice advantage in at least the first 3 rounds.
Colin White assisted on both Dzingel goals, for his second and third points since being recalled for the March 29th game.
So that closes the curtain on the disaster that was the 2017-18 season, and it will be interesting to see how much roster turnover there is, not only at the top but at the bottom and even behind the bench. There is a lot of looking in the mirror to do, and a lot of soul seraching because I don't think anybody in the organization or fan base expected that result and questions have to be asked and answered.
I will start asking them tomorrow, and also trying to answer them myself to try to make sense of what happened and how they can change it.
