Wrap: Flyers Win Rookie Game 1 in Overtime, 2-1
In the first of back-to-back Rookie Series Games at the PPL Center, the Philadelphia Flyers' prospects defeated their New York Rangers counterparts, 2-1 in overtime on Friday evening. 2020 first round pick Tyson Foerster ended the game on the second shift of OT.
The Flyers carried the decided majority of the play in regulation especially in the third period. Nonetheless, the Rangers took a 1-0 lead on a second period power play goal by Matthew Robertson at the 5:33 mark. Incoming Lehigh Valley Phantoms rookie Olle Lycksell knotted the game at 13:30 of the middle stanza on a counterattacking goal. The game remained tied through the rest of regulation.
The Flyers top two lines -- brothers Noah and Jackson Cates with Foerster and Elliot Desnoyers centering Lycksell and Zayde Wisdom -- played quite well throughout the game but particularly in the third period. On the downside, the Flyers were unable to capitalize on 1:55 worth of 5-on-3 power play time early in the second period without generating a Grade A chance. Philly went 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Nolan Maier started the game in goal for the Flyers, stopping 11 of 12 shots. Both teams switched goalies at 10:22 of the second period. Jonathan Lemeiux saw just nine shots, stopping them all to earn the win.
