Baseball may be testing robot umpires next spring which could lead to implementation in 2026. At this point, it looks like they are only going to use as an assist in a challenge. IF this goes through and is successful, it could be a huge shift for the sport and be used more widely.
For the NHL, I don’t know how many penalties or challenges an AI driven robot can be used on. Offsides and pucks over glass? There are inconsistencies in NHL reffing but it may be more effective to have an outside voice. DPS has zero consistency, I have more faith in the refs on ice than in the league. Getting a 3rd party to weigh in on supplemental discipline who are outside of the league may be a stronger improvement for those. People who are trained to compare to precedent etc.
