Quick Hits: January 27, 2019
1) Claude Giroux recorded an assist in the first game and a goal in the second as Team Metro defeated Team Atlantic (7-4) and Team Central (10-5) to win the 2019 NHL All-Star Game mini-tournament. Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby won MVP honors.
2) The Flyers will hold a 2 p.m. practice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Sunday. The game schedule resumes on Monday when they host the Winnipeg Jets at the Wells Fargo Center. Monday's morning skate will be in Voorhees, as has become customary under Scott Gordon.
3) AHL: Carter Hart made 20 saves in a scoreless first period, including a couple of 10-bell saves, but the depleted Lehigh Valley Phantoms eventually fell, 4-1, to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday evening. Hart finished with 32 saves on 35 shots. The final Sound Tigers goal was an empty netter. Justin Bailey scored his 11th goal of the season and second as a Phantom, assisted by Mikhail Vorobyev to briefly tie the game at 1-1 in the second period. Hart will now rejoin the Flyers.
4) Mikhail Vorobyev's agent, Dan Milstein, posted a congratulatory message to his client on Twitter for being recalled to the Flyers. The Flyers have not yet, as of this writing, confirmed it. Vorobyev struggled for awhile after his demotion back to the Phantoms earlier this season after earning an NHL spot in training camp. However, in recent weeks, he has been much more engaged and put together a string of very good games.
5) OHL: Morgan Frost recorded a one-timer power play goal and a primary power play assist in the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds' 8-2 win over the Peterborough Petes on Saturday. Frost's goal was his 31st of the season and the 100th of his OHL career: 73 of his goals came over last season and the current year. For this season, he now up to 77 points (31 goals, 46 assists) in 39 games. Frost's 1.97 points per game average leads the league. On Sunday afternoon, the Hounds host the Kitchener Rangers.
6) OHL: Isaac Ratcliffe's 34th goal of the season extended his point streak to 12 games as the Guelph Storm fell to the host Erie Otters, 3-2, on Saturday. Over his 12-game streak, Ratcliffe has notched 14 goals and five assists for 19 points.
7) OHL: Maksim Sushko had six shots on goal including an empty net tally on Saturday in the Owen Sound Attack's 5-2 win over the Flint Firebirds. The goal was Sushko's 10th of the season.
8) NCAA: Freshman left winger Gavin Hain notched two goals (2nd and 3rd of the season) as North Dakota defeated St. Cloud State, 5-1, on Saturday.
