Post Battle #23: Jackets score five in convincing win over Senators (Blue Jackets)

Final Score: Blue Jackets 5 – Senators 2

Game Summary At the end of the day the final score lined up with how this game went, it just took a while to get there. The Blue Jackets came out guns a blazing in the first period putting up a ridiculous 80.65% Corsi at 5 on 5 and limiting Ottawa to just four shots. Despite the territorial advantage, Ottawa was making the most of their opportunities, and scored the first goal of the game.

The Sens lead did not last long; Cam Atkinson forced a turnover at the blue line and tied the game on a breakaway.

This is a great individual effort by Atkinson. He sees the Ottawa player bobble the puck and he pounces. He makes a subtle move on the breakaway and beats Craig Anderson. Anderson played very well in this game despite what his final stats say. He kept Ottawa in the game and was the reason this game wasn’t an even bigger blowout.

Markus Nutivaara scored the Jackets second goal, his first of the season.

The Jackets were taking a lot of shots like this in this game. They like the defencemen to have the puck while a couple forwards create the screens. If the shot doesn’t get through you have bodies in front to bang away at rebounds. Here the screen works, Anderson can’t see anything and Nutivaara’s shot gets through.

In the third period the floodgates opened. The Jackets put up three goals and cruised to the victory. For a team that’s had trouble scoring this was great to see. The period kicked off with Atkinson scoring his second of the night.

Shortly after that Sonny Milano made a really nice play to get the puck up to Nick Foligno, and Foligno ripped one against his former team.

Foligno playing with the two skilled kids in Milano and Oliver Bjorkstrand seems to be working well through two games. Foligno has points in two straight and Milano picked up that assist, and Bjorkstrand got an assist on the empty net goal, scored by Tyler Motte.
