For the latest Leafs updates or Follow @mikeinbuffalo on Twitter The Toronto Maple Leafs held a three-goal lead early in the third period against the archrival Montreal Canadiens, but made some critical errors and hit the wall in their third game in four nights, as the Habs rallied to win 6-5 in a shootout at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday. Auston Matthews tallied twice (including the game-tying goal with 1:15 left in regulation), Alex Kerfoot, Trevor Moore and William Nylander scored for Toronto, and Michael Hutchinson made 37 saves, but Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares were unable to beat Carey Price after Paul Byron converted in the shootout. “I didn't think we skated very good all night, to be honest with you. Right from start to finish, I thought – we were obviously in a good spot, we weren't real crisp.… Leafs head coach Mike Babcock said after the game. “I thought we looked like we had no gas – I thought the Kerfoot line looked like they had some, but other than that I didn't think we had lots. The Leafs once again surrendered the opening goal early in the first, with Max Domi converting a setup from Arturi Lehkonen, but Toronto responded less than five minutes later with Matthews fourth of the season and took the lead on Kerfoot’s first goal in Blue and White after some nice work behind the net by Moore. Toronto took a two-goal lead in the middle frame with third liners Mikheyev and Moore combining on a two-on-one break, and opened up a 4-1 lead early in the third on Nylander’s power-play goal, but Montreal responded with goals from Jonathan Drouin and Brendan Gallagher 62 seconds apart to cut the Leafs lead to one.
