Nashville Predators captain and former Ottawa Senators centre Mike Fisher has called it a career.
Fisher was one of the more popular Senators players in his 11 years between being drafted and the trade that sent him to the Preds in the purge of 2011.
GM Bryan Murray has said that trading Mike Fisher and Chris Kelly that spring were a couple of the toughest decisions he had to make as an NHL GM.
Fisher was always more than the sum of his parts, and his work ethic (and relationship with one of the most popular country music stars of the era, Carrie Underwood) made him very popular among the fan base.
He wasn't a prolific scorer, but you knew what you were going to get out of him every night, and that was an honest effort. He played 1,088 games between Ottawa and Nashville, and retires without a Stanley Cup ring, after playing in 2 finals - 2007 with Ottawa and this past season with the Preds.
He had hinted almost since signing the two year contract that just expired that it would probably be his last, and he made the decision to stop at age 37. His style of play certainly would warrant that as he was never afraid to mix it up and go the the tough areas.
He finishes with 276 goals and 309 assists in the 1,088 games. He sits 6th in Senators franchise history with 167 goals, 10 in assists with 181 and 9th in points with 348 in his 675 games in Ottawa
Congrats to Mike Fisher on a solid NHL career and good luck in your post-career activities, whether that be in hockey or simply touring around the world with your wife!
