Los Angeles tied it just as a power play expired under two minutes into the second period though, with Phillip Danault wiring a one-timer past Mrazek. It then looked like Anze Kopitar had scored to give the Kings the lead, but the goal was quickly called off due to a penalty to Kevin Fiala on the play. Los Angeles did take some penalties but Chicago couldn’t capitalize and despite the Kings having quite a bit of momentum late they couldn’t capitalize and the game remained tied.
The Kings had some early power play chances in the third period but weren’t able to capitalize to take the lead. They managed 12 shots in the period but and after neither team could break the tie, the game continued to overtime.
We saw a hugely entertaining extra frame, with chances going back and forth. Quick had to make some excellent saves to keep the game going and after he stopped a 2-on-1 with about 15 seconds left in overtime, the Kings went back the other way and Phillip Danault found Kevin Fiala, who one-timed a shot to win it with 1.4 seconds left.
Other than the overtime period where the Kings gave up several high-danger rush chances, Los Angeles put together another pretty decent defensive effort. They only gave up 25 shots in regulation and really weren’t making a ton of huge defensive errors, which was a theme early in the year.
Quick played excellent in overtime, and has now won four of his last five starts. There’s no splitting the workload for Los Angeles right now, with Quick as the clear top option in net.
The win gets Los Angeles up to a 9-6-1 record and they’re now also 3-0 on their homestand. Considering they started the season with two losses, it’s a really solid stretch of games for the Kings.
Los Angeles will be back in action tomorrow, when they face the Detroit Red Wings to wrap up their four-game homestand.
