The New York Islanders have acquired forward Pierre Engvall from the Toronto Maple Leafs, in exchange for a third-round pick in 2024.

The Islanders are looking to do what they can to get into the postseason, and Engvall gives them another option in their bottom-six. At the same time, I’m not sure whether it’s a move that warranted the draft pick. Engvall isn’t going to be a difference-maker on his own and if New York doesn’t make the playoffs and he just walks away as a UFA, the Islanders (who are already thin on future assets) gave up a decent draft pick for virtually nothing.

At the same time, Engvall should get a good opportunity. The Islanders are dealing with injury trouble up front and he may be able to add a bit of offense down the lineup. I’d personally prefer the team either hold onto future assets, or just go for it and give up what they have to in order to add a real impact player with term remaining, rather than giving up mid-round draft picks for supplementary pieces. Regardless, we’ll see if Engvall is a fit down the stretch.
