The Carolina Hurricanes fell to the Washington Capitals in a shootout tonight, losing 4-3.

It looked like Daniel Sprong extended Washington’s lead early in the second period, but it was called off after video review revealed it only hit the crossbar. Carolina then turned the tables a few minutes later, with Vincent Trocheck beating Samsonov with a great shot. Then after the Hurricanes started to find their game as the period went on, Seth Jarvis capitalized off a pass from Jordan Staal with just 12 seconds remaining in the frame, putting Carolina ahead 3-2.
The Capitals took the play to Carolina in the third period though, outshooting the Hurricanes 14-7. Then with about five minutes to go, Alex Ovechkin took a puck off a faceoff on a power play and wired a shot past Raanta, tying it at 3-3 and sending the game to overtime.
The Hurricanes were in survival mode in the extra frame after Seth Jarvis got called for a penalty, but Carolina managed to kill it off and the game continued on to a shootout. However, after the first five shooters missed, Alex Ovechkin went to the backhand to beat Raanta, giving the Capitals the win.
Despite the loss it was a fun game to watch, with a lot of big hits exchanged and intensity from both sides - it definitely had a playoff feel to it.
Unlike Carolina’s last two losses though, this was one where they really weren’t the better team. While the game wasn’t quite as lopsided as the 40-20 shot margin for the Capitals suggests, the Hurricanes were outplayed through a lot of the night.
It was great to see Seth Jarvis get on the board twice though, after sitting a lot over the last little while. If Jordan Martinook does miss any extended time, there shouldn’t be any doubt Jarvis can continue to be an impactful member of the lineup.
The Hurricanes still need to find a way to stop the current slide, even if they probably deserved a better fate in two of these three recent losses. Their next game comes on Sunday against the New York Rangers.
