The NHL's top two teams faced off today, with the Carolina Hurricanes taking a 2-0 win against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Hurricanes dominated early, generating chance after chance by pressuring the Avalanche for turnovers, but couldn’t beat Darcy Kuemper on some excellent opportunities. Shots were about 11-1 at the midway point of the frame and while the Avalanche did start to get some control back in the second half of the period, Carolina threw 19 shots at Kumeper. Despite this, the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes.

Things changed in the second period though and the Avalanche took over, with Colorado outshooting Carolina 17-6. This time, Colorado dominated the first half of the frame, with Carolina only getting going late in the period. This time it was Antti Raanta’s turn to keep the game at 0-0, coming up big for the Hurricanes right up until the intermission.

We finally saw a more even period in the final frame, though the Hurricanes did start to take over a bit later on. Then with only a little over five minutes to go, Ethan Bear’s point shot managed to beat Kuemper, finally opening the scoring and giving Carolina a late 1-0 lead. Then with only 1:30 to go, Sebastian Aho managed to score an empty net goal, securing a Hurricanes win.

Despite it being a 0-0 game for about 55 minutes, the score doesn’t represent how exciting the game was. The matchup certainly lived up to the hype, with the momentum shifting back and forth and the teams exchanging a ton of quality chances.

Antti Raanta was great, making 36 saves in the win and beating his former goaltending partner from his time with the Arizona Coyotes in the goaltending battle. He’s been great filling in for Frederik Andersen, picking up three big wins.

It was fun to see how the Hurricanes stacked up against the Avalanche and great for them come out on top. They've now taken over as the NHL's top team in points percentage.

Their next game comes on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
