Grubauer starts to close out 2019; Makar is Last Men In candidate (Avalanche)

Philipp Grubauer starts in goal Tuesday when the Avalanche face Winnipeg at the Pepsi Center to close out 2019.

The Avalanche have gone 1-3-1 in the past five games, with all four losses coming by blowing leads in the third period.

Mikko Rantanen and Joonas Donskoi will switch lines. Donskoi moves to the top line with Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon. Rantanen will be on the second line with Andre Burakovsky and Kazem Kadri.

Rookie defenseman Cale Makar is the Avalanche's Last Men In candidate to join MacKinnon on the Central Division team for the 2020 NHL All-Star Game.

“It’d be a nice honor, certainly, if it comes, but it’s not at the forefront of my mind right now,… he said after the morning skate.

Despite missing eight games with an upper-body injury, Makar is the Avalanche’s second-leading scorer with 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) in 31 games.

Voting starts Wednesday at 10 a.m. MT and ends Jan. 10 at 9:59 p.m. MT.
