Draisaitl Gets Paid (Oilers)

Per various reports, Leon Draisaitl just signed a deal worth 8.5M per year for 8 years.

Draisaitl was the last Oiler waiting on a contract (except for Jagr, looking your way big guy). The Oilers could have tried to make Draisaitl prove that he was more than McDavid's Winger and that his success will be sustained for years, but obviously preferred locking Draisaitl up to a max length deal.

Draisaitl's skill has been obvious since even his failed rookie campaign, but it wasn't until he became McDavid's regular linemate that he fully tapped into that potential. Even this year, away from McDavid he wasn't able to produce close to the same level of offense.

8.5M per year represents a massive amount of Cap Space to the young German forward. The future of the team is obviously going to be centered around McDavid and Draisaitl. The backend built around Klefbom and Larsson. For now the club can afford Talbot. As the new deals for Klefbom and McDavid kick in over the next two seasons, Edmonton will be forced to make tough choices.
