10 facts on the 10 game winning streak (Blue Jackets)

The Blue Jackets lost on Saturday ending their 10 game win streak. They became just the third team in NHL history to win at least 10 games in a row in consecutive seasons. The streak came at the perfect time as it vaulted the Jackets from out of the playoffs to firmly in the Metro division race. The streak is over and before they start another one tonight in Edmonton, let’s looks back at the most interesting stats from that 10 win streak. All stats from Natural Stat Trick and Hockey-Reference.

.940. The save percentage of Sergei Bobrovsky. Bobrovksy played in seven of the 10 games and was as dominate as ever. He made 205 saves on 218 shots, allowing just a little under two goals per game. His best game of the streak was a 30 save shutout over the Panthers.

54.39%. Markus Nutivaara’s Corsi in the six games he played. That led all Blue Jackets defencemen by a wide margin. No other defencemen cleared 52%.

42. Goals scored by the Jackets. The only team to clear 40 over this stretch. Only Colorado was even close to matching the Jackets goal scoring ways with 35 of their own. Now not every team played the same number of games and when you average it out to goals per game, the Jackets were the second most prolific scoring team. The Toronto Maple Leafs averaged 4.3 goals per game, while the Jackets were at 4.2. They were only two teams to clear four goals per game.

24. Shots blocked by David Savard at 5 on 5. That led the league. Blocking a lot of shots like that is usually the sign of a bigger problem as it means you rarely have the puck. Savard however had the puck more often than not. He and Ian Cole were/are a rock solid defensive pair.

18. The total number of skaters who recorded at least one point. The Jackets used 20 skaters during this run and all but two of them failed to record a point. Brandon Dubinsky and Lukas Sedlak were the two unfortunate ones to not get a point. The fourth line wasn’t great over this period. Mark Letestu had just a single secondary assist, everyone else had at least two points.

17. The number of high danger chances the Blue Jackets had against the Senators on March 17th, at 5 on 5. This was tied for the second highest total of the season and just the fifth time all year the Jackets had cleared 15 HD attempts. In that game Pierre-Luc Dubois and Sonny Milano each had three HD attempts to lead the team.

16. The number of points Artmei Panarin had over the streak. That was by far the most on the team over that stretch, five more than Cam Atkinson who had 11. It was tied for second in the NHL with Nathan MacKinnon and just a point behind Mikko Rantanen.

14. The number of high danger chances Thomas Vanek had at 5 on 5. That led the Blue Jackets and was top 10 in the league, among players like Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Alexander Ovechkin and Brandon Saad.

13.68%. The Jackets shooting percentage. In the 65 games prior to the streak the Blue Jackets had the lowest shooting percentage in the NHL at 7.52%. They were taking plenty of shots but they just weren’t going in. Since the streak they have raised that percentage up to 8.12% and are out of the basement, now in 27th.

9-8-5. The 5 on 5 points scored by the second line of Boone Jenner, Vanek and Alexander Wennberg. Jenner’s nine points tied for the team lead with Panarin and was tied for eighth in the NHL.
