Tim Berni was born on the 11th of February, 2000 from Mannedorf, Switzerland. He is the youngest of two, and son of a former Swiss leaguer. His older brother and two cousins are all active in the Swiss league.

Berni was the captain for all his age groups in his home country - under 16; 18; and 20. His main team was the Zurich Lions.

Berni became the sixth round draft choice for Columbus in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. In his first full season with the Blue Jackets, he had one goal and two assists averaging 16:57 per night.
