This was most certainly not the start Team USA was hoping for at the 2021 World Junior Championship. On paper, the USA has got a strong squad which includes a very good goaltender in Spencer Knight, unfortunately, last night, Knight wasn’t very good, in fact he wasn’t even good. His night ended 32 minutes in after he gave up 4 goals to Russia on 12 shots. The last goal being a result of his own ill-advised attempted clearance which landed straight on a Russian player’s stick. I have to give credit where credit is due though, the Russians played a good game and put on great pressure on the Americans whenever they had the puck. In the end, Russia won 5-3, sealing the deal with an empty net goal after the USA made it a one-goal game on a late powerplay.

How did Caufield fare? Very well if you ask me, although his usage was somewhat mind boggling especially in the first frame. He started the game on the second line alongside Boldy and Beniers and spent just 2:58 minutes of ice time during the first period in 5 shifts. He still managed to get the primary assist on Cam York’s goal, the sole American marker in the opening 20 minutes. Furthermore, for a player who’s often criticized about his defensive game, he showed great awareness by cutting a breakout pass which would have sent a Russian player on a shorthanded breakaway.

Caufield saw more ice time in the second with 7:28 in 8 shifts and found himself playing with Alex Turcotte and Trevor Zegras once the Russians took a 4-1 lead. He managed 3 shots on goal but couldn’t find twine on any of them, showed some slick puck handling moves especially on a very sweet dangle that allowed him to reach the Russian net, unfortunately, nothing came of the attack. There were a few great passing plays with Turcotte and Zegras as well but none of them was converted.

In the final frame, even though the USA were in dire need of a goal, Caufield landed back on the second line and Kaliyev returned with Turcotte and Zegras. Still, the Habs prospect saw as much action as he did in the second period, spending 7:27 on the ice over 9 shifts and taking 2 shots on net. In the end, Caufield was the third most used forward in the game and finished it with an assist and a -1 rating. Overall, this was a pretty good game for him as he once again showed that he’s good at finding space for himself in the slot and with a bit of luck, he definitely could have had a couple of goals.

Team USA won’t have long to lick its wounds as it will face-off against Austria tonight at 9:30 PM, it will be interesting to see if the coach goes back to Spencer Knight or if he sticks with Dustin Wolf in net. Before then though, you can see Jan Mysak and the Czech Republic in action against Sweden at 2 PM EST and Team Canada with Kaiden Guhle take on Germany at 6 PM.
