The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday that they’ve traded defenseman Jaycob Megna to the Seattle Kraken, in exchange for a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft.

Megna is 30 years old and despite spending the majority of his career in the minors, he’s played much of the last two years in the NHL with the Sharks. This season, Megna had 12 points in 48 games with San Jose and the defenseman has a year remaining on his contract, at a $762,500 cap hit.

It’s a relatively small trade, but any draft picks the Sharks can manage to get back is a win. Megna did end up getting a good opportunity with San Jose and spent much of the season playing with Erik Karlsson. At the same time, with the addition of Jacob MacDonald and the return of Nikolai Knyzhov, the Sharks have other defenders who can take over for Megna.

San Jose needs to continue building long-term and getting a mid-round pick for a player who won’t be part of future plans makes sense.
