Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jake Gardiner will be having hip and back surgeries and is expected to miss the entire 2021-22 season.

Gardiner joined the Hurricanes in 2019 and has played a total of 92 games with the team, scoring four goals and 32 points. However, he played just 26 regular season games with Carolina this year and was placed on waivers partway through the season.

He still has two years remaining on his contract, at a $4.05 million cap hit. However, the Hurricanes will be able to place his contract on long-term injured reserve for the season, which will leave the team with increased financial flexibility.
