The Carolina Hurricanes picked up an important road victory over the New York Rangers tonight, winning 4-2.

The Hurricanes didn’t have a great start, with some trouble getting pucks out and generating sustained offense. They were outshot 14-8 in the frame, but the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes.

K’Andre Miller opened the scoring for New York early in the second frame, taking a pass from Mika Zibanejad to bury the puck into the empty net. The Hurricanes did start to generate more offense as the period went on though, with Andrei Svechnikov banking a puck in off Igor Shesterkin to tie the game heading into the second intermission.

Then only a minute into the third frame, Seth Jarvis took a pass from Sebastian Aho to get in behind the defenders, then made a nice move to score. Then a little later in the frame, Jordan Staal got to a loose puck, before turning to fire a shot past Shesterkin, making it a 3-1 game. The Hurricanes managed to turn it into a fairly low-event game after that and while Chris Kreider did score late, an empty net goal from Sebastian Aho sealed the win for Carolina.

It’s a key win for the Hurricanes, beating the very team they’re battling for top spot in the Metropolitan Division. A regulation loss for the Hurricanes would’ve meant the teams would be tied for top spot in the division but with the win, Carolina now leads by four points, with each team at just eight games remaining.

As for the game itself, the Hurricanes didn’t have the greatest first half, but turned things around in the second period and Carolina ended up taking more control about midway through the middle frame.

It was a clutch performance for the Hurricanes to extend their lead in the Metro and hopefully the Hurricanes can build some momentum with the win. Carolina's next game comes on Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings.
