The Carolina Hurricanes split their set of two home games late this week, defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0, before falling 3-1 to the Minnesota Wild.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring early against Montreal on Thursday, with Sebastian Aho tipping in a pass from Teuvo Teravainen on a power play under four minutes into the game. Then after the Hurricanes continued to press in the period, Andrei Svechnikov somehow managed to deflect Jaccob Slavin’s pass through Jake Allen, putting Carolina up 2-0 after 20 minutes. Teuvo Teravainen then put the Hurricanes up 3-0 early in the second period and Carolina then went on to dominate the frame, throwing a ridiculous 26 shots on Allen. Carolina did let up in the third period, being outshot 14-2, but Andrei Svechnikov scored an empty net goal and Frederik Andersen picked up the shutout in a 4-0 Hurricanes win.

Then yesterday, the Wild opened the scoring midway into the opening frame off a shot from Mats Zuccarello on a power play. Then just four minutes into the second period, Dmitry Kulikov came out of the box and took a pass on a rush, going five-hole on Andersen to make it a 2-0 game. Carolina had a strong period, outshooting Minnesota 15-7 in the frame, but remained down by two goals after 40 minutes. Then in the third period, Kirill Kaprizov beat Andersen with a quick shot from a bad angle, increasing the lead to 3-0. The Hurricanes did put together a strong frame and Teuvo Teravainen got the Hurricanes on the board later in the period but the Wild hung on for a 3-1 win.

Both outings were pretty solid performances by the Hurricanes, outshooting their opponents by a combined total of 82-51.

Even if the Hurricanes didn’t have an overly strong third period against Montreal, they still dominated the first 40 minutes and it was a really strong performance. Then against Minnesota, the Hurricanes had more issues capitalizing on some of their chances but were still generating opportunities, though it wasn't the best game from Frederik Andersen either.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi also missed both games with a lower body injury that was sustained against the Washington Capitals. He’s expected to miss two to three weeks.

The Hurricanes have 13 regular season games remaining, the next of which comes on Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres.
