Cale Makar Signs Historic 8-Year, 20.4 Million AAV Extension with Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche have officially secured their superstar defenseman for the long haul. Cale Makar has officialy signed a record breaking eight-year contract extension worth 163.2 million dollars. This historic contract immediately makes Makar the highest paid player in NHL history. Represented by Bartlett Hockey, Makar receives a 20.4 million dollar annual cap hit. This monumental Avalanche deal lands just shy of the 20.8 million dollar maximum limit he was eligible to receive. The previous NHL record total dollars belonged to Kirill Kaprizov, while Macklin Celebrini held the record for highest AAV. 

The financial structure of this contract is very lucrative and heavily bonus laden. For the first three years of the agreement, Makar will receive a 4 million dollar base salary alongside a 16.8 million dollar signing bonus. Year four shifts to a 12.8 million dollar base with an 8 million dollar bonus. The structure reverts in year five to a 4 million dollar base and a 16.8 million dollar bonus. Year six features a 3 million dollar base and a 16.8 million dollar bonus, followed by a 2.8 million dollar base and an identical bonus in year seven. The final year concludes with a 1 million dollar base and an 18.8 million dollar signing bonus.

To provide ultimate security, the contract includes a full No Move Clause. By locking up Makar, the Avalanche have set a new financial benchmark that permanently redefines the NHL player market.
