It appears Red Wings fans wishing they could see top net minding prospect Sebastian Cossa have gotten their way, though perhaps not in the fashion they were hoping.
The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Sebastian Cossa from the Grand Rapids Griffins and re-assigned defenseman Erik Gustafsson to their AHL affiliate. The move comes in the wake of star veteran netminder John Gibson leaving the Red Wings' last game with a “shoulder stinger” according to head coach Todd McClellan. McLellan described his status as "day to day" during morning skate March 4.
Gibson was acquired this off-season by the Red Wings in order to stabilize a goaltending situation wracked by instability and injuries these past few years. After a slow start to the year with his new team, Gibson has settled in as one of the leagues top goalies once again. Between the pipes for the Red Wings since December of this season, Gibson has started in 26 games, going 19-5-1, taking over the starters net as incumbent Cam Talbot’s performance has declined after a strong start to the season.
Cossa, drafted in 2021, meanwhile has been developing in the AHL for the Red Wings over the last few years, and is currently one of the top netminders in the league, leading the Grand Rapids Griffins to the best record in the AHL. Cossa is having his best season yet, with a record of 24-4-3-5 and a sv % of .927, dropping his GAA from last year to 1.99.
Calling Cossa up just before the trade deadline shows the Red Wings think that they may need his services through the rest of the week at least, as Talbot hasn't appeared in back to back games in over a month. Detroit plays the Vegas Golden Knights tonight, March 4th at 7PM, and have three total games before the end of the week. Talbot is slated to start against the Golden Knights, and the Red Wings will honor Patrick Kane for reaching the 500 goal mark in a pre-game ceremony.
